Cold Weather and Your Skin

As winter in Chicago approaches you may be dreading “winter skin” – dry, itchy, and so uncomfortable. Central heating pulls the moisture out of the air inside, adding to the rigors outside – harsh cold and more dry air and wind. Together, these factors combine to strip your skin of its moisture and promote inflammation that makes psoriasis, eczema, and other skin disorders flare. Cracked, dry, and painful lips are yet another victim of the harsh environment. Our founder, Dr. Amy Derick, has made a video discussing some tips for caring for winter skin here. We also have a few suggestions to help alleviate some of the discomfort, which you can read below.

Treat Your Skin with Gentle Care

Don’t bathe or shower too frequently, and when you do be sure to use moderately warm water, bath oils, and moisturize your skin within 3 minutes after your shower or bath, while it is still damp.

Use Gentle Cleansers and Moisturizers

Be sure to apply cleansers that are soap-free and use moisturizers with SPF15 or greater.

Consider Using a Hyaluronic Acid Supplement for Extra Protection

Masques or serums that contain hyaluronic acid can retain skin moisture much more effectively than those without.

Put a Peptide Serum to Work While You Sleep

Argan oil, added to a peptide serum, will supply fatty acids, Vitamin E, ferulic acid, and plant sterols that will nourish the lipid layer of your skin.

Use Special Creams for Dry Legs and Bumpy Arms

An over-the-counter cream containing alpha hydroxy acid will help to exfoliate dry, flaky skin, as well as provide much-needed moisture. A cream with ceramides is especially useful for those dry skin bumps that can appear on the backs of arms.

Don’t Lick Your Lips!

Saliva contains bacteria and digestive enzymes that are hard on soft lip tissue. Look for a lip balm with conditioners like shea butter and avocado to soothe and nourish your lips and protect them from harsh elements.

Invest in a Humidifier for Your Home

Minimize exposure to harsh winter elements by installing a humidifier in your home. The humidifier will help compensate for the moisture removed by your heating system and will protect your skin during the hours you are home.
